Burpham and Wepham

A South Downs Community

Book Club

BURPHAM BOOK CLUB meets at 4pm on the first Wednesday afternoon of each month from September to July inclusive.   Meetings are held in members’ homes, where tea and cake are served before a lively discussion of the book choice of the previous month.    A wide-ranging selection of books is chosen to give variety throughout the year and members find it interesting to read some books that they wouldn’t necessarily have chosen themselves.
If you’d like further information please contact Val Belton (Chair) on 01903 883288 or email valeriebelton@gmail.com

Investment Club

The club meets every month to discuss existing and new investments, in shares or investment trusts. The club was set up under the ProShare Club Scheme and follows the rules and guidelines set by ProShare.  Each member takes responsibility for a particular investment/s and advises details of the investment.  The club welcomes new members who are interested in shares or would like to participate in this type of investment.  There is a joining fee and and a monthly subscription, these monies being used for investment.  Meetings are held in the Village Hall on the first Tuesday of every month at 11.00 am, followed by a drink and a sandwich in the George.  For further information please contact Douglas Gold,  Chairman,  (01903 883134) or John Hollister, Secretary, (01903 883844).

Stoolball Club

Burpham first had a Stoolball team in the 1920s, although it did not play during World War II, and only re-formed in 1954.  Stoolball is a uniquely Sussex tradition, played with large round wooden paddle-shaped bats and square wickets at shoulder height. It is played on the wonderful setting of Burpham cricket pitch, on the Anglo-Saxon burgh.

Today we play in two leagues:
Chantonbury Ladies on Mondays, and Coastal League on Wednesdays, giving us around 35 games a season, which finishes in September. Information on the rules of stoolball, and our fixtures in the two leagues can be found on the  Stoolball England Facebook page
Interested ladies should contact Vanessa Challen on 01903 885895

Cricket Club

Founded in 1880, the Cricket Club is still going strong.  The aim is to play good quality friendly Village Cricket, mostly against local Clubs and Villages.  We play on Sundays, and most of our matches are played at home, on the Burpham Recreation Ground.  Some of our opponents enjoy playing here so much that we have had fixtures against them for 50 years or more.
The Club is aiming to develop a thriving Colts section who are coached by qualified coach at Burpham, (Saturday mornings 10.00 - 12.00 during the summer), and the aim is to play matches locally.

Short Mat Bowls Club

The bowls evenings in the Village Hall are held every Tuesday from October to April from 7 pm to 9 pm.  Most bowlers are from Burpham & Wepham villages.  We have two indoor short mats and a range of club bowls that would suit most people, although many bowlers prefer to use their own bowls.
The cost per evening is £2, this money being used to pay for the hire of the Village Hall and replace any worn out equipment.
The bowling competence ranges from beginner to experienced bowlers.  Everyone is welcome to come along and join us for an enjoyable evening.
For more information telephone Ron Chapple (01903 884178) or Peter Werner (01903 889995).
